Gone Home - Les AlfreySunday 31 May 20091932 - 2009It is with the deepest sadness possible that we write of the recent passing of Les Alfrey. Many members and ex-members of 1st Bedworth will most likely remember Les from his long years of work with Broadwater Scout Campsite at Packington. The site was recently renamed The Alfrey Activity Centre Broadwater in honour of this work. The current bunch of leaders at 1st Bedworth came to know Les a little over twenty years ago as Venture Scouts attending parties and work parties at Broadwater Campsite. Then later, and more closely, as they became more involved in the county Land Activities Team and county council SIGMA days. Reflecting on Les's life as a Scout through the stories and history he passed on, it would be easy to think he had been around forever and had quite possibly even given BP the idea for Scouting in the first place. He certainly wouldn't taken credit for it if he had. Les loved his Scouting and made sure those who came into contact with him took some of that enthusiasm away also. Scouting has a lot of people who can tell a good windup story, but Les was up their with the very best. Getting Beavers and Cubs to believe that scars on his leg were from a crocodile he fought off in Australia has to be one of the best. But so many were in fact true, especially those relating to his younger days in Scouting and he and his peers having safely done activities that younger Leaders today can only dream of in this more regulated age - The time he and friend tried to see how far they could go on the Penine Way before an unfortunate incident with a cat ended their plans is one of the funniest true stories ever told by man. He will be sadly missed but will always be an inspiration. Congratulation on Becky and Mike's new additionThursday 28 May 2009

It's official, Bear Grylls has been appointed to the position of Chief Scout and 1st Bedworth would like to wish him every success and best of luck. He succeeds Peter Duncan who many would agree has done a fantastic job of raising the profile of Scouting during his time. So big thank you to Peter also. Here is the official Scout Association press release Just in case you have never heard of 'Bear' before or would like to know more, here are some links you might find useful: The official Bear Grylls website Bear Grylls on Wikipedia Scouting Census Records Record GrowthMonday 27 April 2009
If you look at the national news today you will probably see stories about the continuing, fantastic growth of Scouting all over the UK. The figures released last night by the Scout Association from this years annual census show a further increase of 2.6% in total membership. This may not seem like much at first glance, but nationally this brings the adult membership to almost 500,000! ... and we have good news locally too. This latest census shows that we have grown for the sixth year running with increases across all sections and a total membership of 182 children, young people and adults. If you want to read more about the national growth, particularly in the number of girls in Scouting, you can read the headquarters press release here. Last Night our Explorers entered a team in NIKE, the annual district night hike competition for Explorers. The great news is we won. Well done Adele, Charlie, Charlotte, Jessie, Karis, Leigh and Ryan. The team performed very well and in every respect they were a credit to 1st Bedworth, and to Scouting in general. When I spoke to Sophie early today everyone was having a celebration breakfast in MacDonalds. I am sure that this celebration was very well deserved The entry for the competition was disapointing with only three units entering. The other teams were from Attleborough and Nuneaton Central. Weddington who were last years winners did not defend the trophy. This is the third trophy we have won this year. The Cubs were awarded the Alan Flavell Trophy at the District Scavenger Hunt held at Hartshill Hayes and the Beavers were awarded the Bronze Beaver at Saint George's Day Parade for being the best Beaver Colony in the District. The previous site design has been very successful for us and most of our recruitment over the last few years has come through it. We are very grateful to our former Secretary, Paul Woodward, for the work he put into it. Thanks Paul. Going, Going, Gone!Wednesday 27 February 2008
