District Scout Walking & Canoeing Weekend 2011
Friday night
We left Screwfix carpark at just 6pm, after meeting all the other scouts and leaders from the District. We had a three hour nice gentle drive down to Wales. The weather was a bit of mixed travelling down. Finally we got to the campsite at around 9pm and it had stopped raining. We all put the tents up in the nice dry weather. By 10.00pm everyone was chilling out and eating burgers that Matt & Oggy made. Everyone was having a good old chat and started getting tired. So we all turned in at 11.00pm for a good day tomorrow.
Saturday
It was a good old early start at7.30am. Everyone got up and start sitting in the mess tent and ready for breakfast. Breakfast was served, but some off 1st Bedworth Scouts got up late which were also late for breakfast. After breakfast we all had a meeting about who was doing which activity today. Half off us was going the good old walk up the hills in Wales and some off us was doing a nice stroll in the kayaks down the river Wye. So we all went to get ready for the activities and the ones that going kayaking got on to the mini bus for a short drive to river. We finally got to the river and the weather was abit of a mix sun, wind, rain which wasn’t that bad I guess. We all carried the kayaks down to the river and got our life jackets and are spray decks on. We all got in a circle under the bridge and started doing a warm up which was just jogging around. After we all warmed up we had to do some stretches before we got in the kayaks. We all choose the kayak that was best for them and got are selves on to the river.
Everyone was finally on the river and just messing round and getting used to the water. We started gently paddling down the river and we came to some small rapids along the way. Some of the scouts were still finding it tricky to paddle in a straight line so some off the leaders helped them. After a while they all got use to it and all stayed together.
We finally got half way on our journey which was lunch time. We all got out off the kayaks to stretch are legs and have a break. The packed lunches were nice and gave us all some energy for the rest off way. Some off us changed from the kayaks into the Canadians. Before we all got back on to the water we had to practice putting up the cold weather tent and put it back down again. Everyone was working as a team which was good.
We finally got back on to the water and continued our journey. Along the way we had a play point. All the Scouts and leaders had to try and ride the rapids without falling out, I lost the game as I fell out . He wasn’t the first person to go in on the river though, he was maybe the second or third which made 1st Bedworth look good as it usually one of our member that goes in first. We all got back to dry land were the mini buses were waiting for us to take us back to camp. We all got changed into dry clothes but this is were we found some Scouts had forgotten their dry clothes and towels. We all were on the mini bus in the warm but it started raining on the way back to camp. We got to camp and finally the sun came back out and then we all met up with the walkers.
I left the campsite for a couple of hours to find a place where they sold border collies as the wife and Alice and Charlie asked me to. I lucky found a place not too far which had some lovely puppies. So I brought one and left it there for the night to collect in the morning.
I got back in time for tea which was pasta and bolognaise and a nice hot drink to warm everyone up. We had some time to chat and catch up on how the day went for the others. The weather was quite cold. and some of the Scouts & Leaders had turned in before 9.00pm because everyone shattered from a long day and for another good day tomorrow.
Sunday
Bad start already by the horrible rain that woke mostly everyone up early.
Everyone started getting up for another great breakfast to start the day. The Scouts swapped activities but I was kayaking again. We all got ready and got are pack lunches and headed to the hills or the river.
We headed to the river and it was still raining, so we all hurried up getting the kayaks down to the river. We all got warmed up and headed down the river. We all rode the rapids and we were trying not to get too wet as it was still raining.
We finally got half way were we all stopped to have something to eat and make us more energetic and warmed up for the last half. After a few minutes we all started getting to cold so we had to put up the cold weather tent up for real to get the Scouts warmed up. We all got warmed up and headed to the end of the route. We finally met the mini bus and started heading back to the campsite, to get a nice warm shower and to pack all the things away and to put on the trailer.
Overall during the kayaking over the weekend only one person from 1st Bedworth capsized ,so 1st Bedworth should be proud off not loosing this time.
Heading home
First off all I headed home early to collect the new puppy which we called Jess at the end of the day.
We all had a good weekend this year. The weather didn’t spoil the camp or anything and I think the leaders and all of the Scouts enjoyed it again this year. I would like to thank
Dave , Matt and all the other leaders who organised this weekend and also the Scouts that took part in both activities. Roll on 2012 Llangsorse Kayaking and Walking Camp
