This year’s event took place from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th June. We were based on a campsite at Llangorse in the Brecon Beacons. We took two minibuses full of enthusiastic Scouts, Leaders and Instructors to enjoy a great weekend organised by Kevin and his team.

Last year we had wind and rain, this year we were blessed with warm sunny weather. Yes Kevin had even arranged perfect weather for this years event! The Scouts were organised into activity groups. The groups consisted of a number of Scouts from different Scout Groups to encourage everyone to mix and get to know each other. On each day a number of the activity groups went mountain walking, and the other activity groups went canoeing, This meant that over the two days every Scout took part in both activities.

Six Scouts, two Explorers and four adults from 1st Bedworth enjoyed this weekend this year. All of our eight Patrol Leaders were offered the opportunity to attend as part of their leadership development, their cost being paid from Group funds. Unfortunately two of them were unable to attend and they missed a great weekend.

It was also a tad disappointing that a number of Troops in the District did not have Scouts on this event, I am sure that their youngsters would have gained a lot from this experience and it’s a pity they missed out. The good news is that the event will be taking place again next year ad hopefully it will be supported by every Troop in Nuneaton District.

One of our Patrol Leaders who attended volunteered to write us an activity report. This is Alice’s report on the weekend.

On Friday night when we travelled we were all hyper’ on the minibus. I was also happy that I didn’t have Charlie and Sarah on my minibus as I would have had an headache. We got to Llangorse about 9’ish. Our tents were up so Kayleigh and I helped Central, Chilvers , Central and Bulkington put their tents up.

Saturday morning came and it was really sunny. We all had breakfast and found out our groups for the weekend. Kayleigh, Gemma , some other Scouts and I were kayaking first. Another group were walking on Satrurday. We all got our packed lunches that were made by Matt and Dave and they were pretty nice. We all went on the minibus for about a twenty minute journey to the River Wye. We took all of the kayaks and canoes down to the river and got the spray decks and our life jackets on. We all did a warm up before we got on to the river. We all got into the river and had a little mess around and did some races. It was about 10.00am when we started our journey. The currents were a bit bad when we started but I got used to it. Later on we came to the first rapids and everyone was scared to go down first, so I went down first and I didn’t out of the kayak, whoop!

Later on we had our dinner. Gemma, Charlie and I were putting rocks on Stephen’s life jacket and it was pretty funny to be honest. Then it was about 12.30pmso we started off again and came to another set of rapids and guess what ?......I came out : But I was only under water for a bit and then I popped back up. It was quite scary at first but it was ok. We finally finished and put all the kayaks and canoes away. The girls got changed in the forest nearby. We also saw WILL YOUNG because on of the Scouts asked him and he said “yes” he was. We got back on the minibus and went back to camp. When we returned to camp we found out the showers were 20p for 3 minutes. We thought this was quite expensive but as we didn’t have to pay for the camp we paid up and all had a shower. I was the clever one ! Instead of  paying another 20p for the hairdryer, I stood there and used the hand dryer for free, luckily there were no other people coming in. The night finally came and Kayleigh, James, Calum, Anthony, myself and some other people were in a field next to where we were staying and getting chased by this dog.

The next morning came and it was time for breakfast and a walk up the Black Mountain. We all got split up into boys and girls groups. The boys went first as they were doing a harder walk then us. We left site about 10.00am and had a nice slow walk. Trying to get to the top was quite hard but we made it at last. It took about 5 hours getting up and down the mountain. We had good laughs along the way and were singing “Don’t stop believing” We got back to camp and took our tents down and did a litter pick. There wasn’t much litter to be honest just bits and pieces.

I really enjoyed the camp and I was glad I went. We had such good laughs and the food was alright ! Thanks to Dave for inviting all of the Patrol Leaders to go free. I hope there will be one next year which I will be able to go on. Thanks to all the leaders who made the weekend happen.
